Bar Council is pleased to inform that we have successfully negotiated with our insurers for a 7.7% reduction in Professional Indemnity (PI) premium to RM1,200 per lawyer (2010 premium was RM1,300).
Although usage of our risk management tools and practice area checklists are still not at a desirable rate, our Risk Management Programme has gained the confidence of our insurers. Our risk management efforts and initiatives to increase awareness of instilling a sound work culture have resulted in our insurers agreeing to this reduced premium!

Public debate on race and rights has descended into a shouting and slanging match. We need to approach the issue objectively, with all stating their case rationally.
HANG on to your seats; this might get a tad uncomfortable. Probably everyone in this country has a story or two to tell about their encounters with racism. And I wouldn’t be surprised if of late, there has been an urge for you to relate your experience.
It is after all, in keeping with the times, which has seen a blooming of debates, discussions, claims, allegations, counter-claims and counter-allegations that you and I have had the “privilege” to follow in our newspapers, and online through social media platforms such as Twitter and blogs.
GEORGE TOWN: Surgeons must obtain their female patients' consent before taking pictures of their intimate parts, the High Court ruled yesterday.
Judicial commissioner Chew Soo Ho, in allowing the claim by former reporter Lee Ewe Poh, 51, against general and colorectal surgeon Dr Lim Teik Mau and Loh Guan Lye & Sons Sdn Bhd, said the modesty of female patients must be respected and not violated.
"Failure to do so constitutes invasion of privacy, and a breach of trust and confidence," Chew said in awarding Lee with RM25,000 in general damages and RM10,000 in costs.

INFORMATION, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim feels that the Sedition Act 1948 is outdated and it is time the Race Relations Act is put in place to spell out what is acceptable and not, to avoid a repeat of incidents such as the insensitive utterances by some school heads recently.
He said as the General Orders did not specify the kinds of action to be taken against those found undermining racial harmony, such incidents were bound to happen.
As such, he said, the existing law needs to be reviewed.
In an interview with Sin Chew Daily published yesterday, Rais also
suggested the setting up of a race relations committee or forum.

The introduction of the statutory derivative action is discussed extensively in Chapter 17.
KUALA LUMPUR: Suhakam is working on a draft policy on business and human rights.
“This policy will be enforced by the Government and observed by business entities,” commissioner James Nayagam told The Star yesterday after a roundtable dialogue with several ministries and government agencies at the Suhakam office.
“Most of the agencies were in agreement with our exploratory dialogue and had suggestions as to what could be included in the policy, for example, sexual harassment and allowing workers to perform their religious obligations,” he said.
